Semuliki National Park

Semuliki National Park

The Semuliki National Park is one of the most undiscovered treasures in Uganda and is found in the West of the country in Bundibugyo District. The park has a coverage of 220 square kilometres and it is situated within the Albertine Rift Valley bordering the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Unlike more popular Ugandan parks like Bwindi Impenetrable or Queen Elizabeth, Semuliki is a unique combination of lowland tropical rainforest, bird diversity, hot springs and cultural experiences. Those who want to have a special safari that is free of crowds should visit this park.

Geography and Ecosystem

Semuliki National Park is an extension of the huge Ituri Forest ecosystem, which stretches to the Congo Basin. It is the only genuine lowland tropical forest in East Africa, and is at an altitude of approximately 670 to 760 meters above sea level.

The park is drained by the Semuliki River, which is one of the major tributaries of the Congo River. Its thick vegetation and swampy land form habitats for rare species, which are relatively common in central Africa. This renders the park a hot spot of biodiversity and a must-visit place for eco-tourists.

Wildlife in Semuliki National Park

It may be less famous than Murchison Falls or Queen Elizabeth National Park in terms of big game viewing but Semuliki is a worthwhile wildlife destination. Tourists are able to see forest elephants, buffaloes, leopards, bush pigs, waterbucks, and pygmy antelopes.

Primates are in abundance, including chimpanzees, olive baboons, grey-cheeked mangabeys, and vervet monkeys, which are found in the forest. Other attractions in the park include the beautiful colobus monkey with its distinctive black and white colouring that is regularly observed jumping between the tree tops.

Birdwatching Paradise

Semuliki National Park is one of the best birdwatching sites in Africa. The park has more than 440 species recorded and is particularly known to contain Central African bird species that are hardly found in East Africa. Bird watchers can observe the Congo serpent eagle, long-tailed hawk, Nkulengu rail, yellow-throated cuckoo and the African dwarf kingfisher. The park is also a paradise to any ornithologist or bird lover since there are bird watching tours to the Sempaya and Ntandi areas.

Sempaya Hot Springs: The symbol of the Park

One of the most characteristic features of Semuliki National Park is the Sempaya Hot Springs. The hot spring is divided into two: the male one, Bitende, and the female, Nyasimbi. The female springs boil water several meters above the ground, whereas the male spring creates a broad pool of boiling water.

The hot springs are not only beautiful scenery, but have also been used as cultural sites by the locals. One of the most enjoyable activities visitors can do is to boil eggs or plantains in the hot water, and it is a great experience during any safari.

Batwa and Bakonjo Cultural Experiences

A safari to Semuliki is not only about wildlife, but also about culture. There are different communities in the region, including the Batwa (pygmy) people, Bakonjo, Bamba and Bakiga. The Batwa, especially, are hunter-gatherers who are close to the forest.

Cultural tours also enable the visitor to be enlightened on traditional music, dances and survival skills, which makes the park experience richer. These experiences point to the co-existence of people and nature in the Ugandan protected areas.

Activities in Semuliki National Park

There are various activities that visitors to Semuliki can engage in in addition to game viewing.

Guided Nature Walks: Walk through the forest paths to the Sempaya Hot Springs and through the swampy areas where you can observe unique wildlife.

Birdwatching Tours: There are specialised Uganda tours which give one a chance to see rare bird species with the help of expert birders.

Cultural Visits: Visit the locals and experience their culture.

Game Drives: Game drives are less common and will give you an opportunity to view forest elephants and buffaloes in open spaces.

River Excursions: The Semuliki River offers the chance to explore scenically, but activities here are less than other larger rivers in Uganda.

Accommodation Options

There are budget to mid-range facilities around Semuliki National Park. There are also places to stay, with visitors able to stay at Semuliki Safari Lodge, the most developed lodge in the region, where there are comfortable bandas as well as luxury tented units.

On a limited budget, there are guesthouses and simple camping sites around the park headquarters. Fort Portal and Bundibugyo are nearby towns that offer other accommodation options to travellers who combine Semuliki with other attraction sites in western Uganda.

Best time to visit Semuliki.

The park can be accessed all year round, but the best months to visit the park are during the dry seasons, December to February and June to September. The months are easier to navigate the trails and more gratifying in terms of wildlife viewing. The rainy season (March to May and October to November) can make certain paths muddy and difficult, but it also increases the lushness of the forest and brings migratory birds, making it a good time of year to see birds.

How to access Semuliki National Park

Emuliki is road accessible through Kampala, through Fort Portal, approximately 6 to 7 hours. It takes approximately 2 hours to get to the park headquarters at Sempaya through Fort Portal. Domestic charter flights are also available to fly travellers to airstrips in Fort Portal or Semuliki from Entebbe or Kajjansi. The ride to the destination is also scenic, with the hills of the Rwenzori Mountains, crater lakes and hills.

Conclusion

Unlike other parks in Uganda, Muliki National Park is not highly sought after, but it integrates the elements of wildlife, culture and natural attractions remarkably. The park is a guarantee of a unique safari experience with its steaming Sempaya Hot Springs and the rare species of birds and cultural richness of the Batwa people.

Semuliki is a great destination to visit for those who are willing to leave common paths and get to know the most secret treasures of Uganda. A safari in this region will give you a real taste of adventure, unsurpassed scenery and an opportunity to interact with nature and the culture of one of the most biodiverse areas of Africa.
