Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary : Only three hours’ drive northwest of Kampala, the capital of Uganda, is Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, which is situated in Nakasongola. Masindi, the closest town south of the Murchison Falls national park, is only a 45-minute drive away if you’re traveling from there. For visitors going to or from a wildlife safari in Murchison Falls National Park, this makes it a great place to halt.

There were a lot of rhinos in Uganda in the 1990s, but during the major wars in the 1970s, there were a lot of rhinos killed, poached, and hunted, and by 1983, they had gone extinct. The Rhino Fund Uganda created the sanctuary and reintroduced rhinos in 2005. The only location where you may track rhinos on foot is Ziwa; it’s an amazing and thrilling experience to see the white rhinoceros! As a result of the events of the 1990s, this location is under strict 24-hour security.

The refuge, which collaborates with Ziwa Ranchers Limited and the Uganda Wildlife Authority, employs over 78 incredibly talented and trained park rangers. There are now roughly 19 rhinos, compared to the initial 6 animals. In addition to rhinos, Ziwa is home to 40 other animal species, including antelopes, crocodiles, hippos, and monkeys, as well as a variety of bird and reptile species. Although rhino tracking is the main activity, there is also much to see and do in the sanctuary, including bird watching and nature hikes.
