The lodge was built in 1974 by the Danish architect Hans Munk Hansen as a wing of the Uganda Hotels chain. Pakuba Safari Lodge was originally the champion of tourism in the park. During the era of Idi Amin (1971-1979), it was converted into a state lodge for the president, with a view of the river where the Nile meets Lake Albert.
Renovated in the early 2000s and rebranded as an eco-lodge, former staff quarters have been turned into guest rooms; it now fuses historical charm with contemporary comfort and gives back to conservation and local communities by way of sustainable practices. Situated in a prime game-viewing area, it offers boat cruises, game drives for elephants and lions, chimp tracking, birding (470+ bird species), and nature walks.
The lodge has a total of 43 units made up of 38 standard cottages and 5 superior units with views of the Nile; all units are en-suite with hot showers and include mosquito nets, fans, verandas and comfortable king- or queen-sized beds.

The owners prioritise local job creation, skills development and women’s initiatives and source ingredients locally, creating an authentic and inviting experience.
The lodge has between 10 and 12 units: large thatched cottages (open-plan for families/groups of 4, with double beds on the mezzanine floor, twins on the ground floor and hammocks on verandas) and simple camping alternatives. Located on 7 acres of thick bush in Paraa along the Nile, it captures the essence of rugged safari sophistication with airy, open-fronted cabins that merge into the landscape. Eco-conscious with solar energy, construction from local materials and located just 5 minutes from park gates, it’s perfect for game drives, boat safaris to the falls, birdwatching and cultural visits.
The lodge boasts 12-16 individual safari cabins scattered throughout the property; all are doubles or twins accommodating 2-4 guests. They have en-suite bathrooms with hot water, comfortable king beds with mosquito netting, fans, screened windows for ventilation, private verandas overlooking the Nile, tea/coffee makers and are decorated with rustic furniture crafted from local woods.
